An umbilical cord clamp is a small medical device that doctors and midwives use to clamp a newborn’s umbilical cord immediately after birth. This closes off the cord’s blood supply and protects the stump from infection. Clinical staff remove the clamp when the cord has completely dried and bleeding has stopped on its own usually within 24 to 48 hours.
