The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) , also known simply as the Ujjwala Yojana , is one of India’s most impactful social welfare schemes aimed at improving the quality of life for women in rural and low-income households. Launched by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2016 , the scheme provides free LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
